Movie Subtitles is an open-source Chrome Extension and can be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store. I too hate when the subtitle gets ahead of the actor I wish there was a timing feature to delay it just a few milliseconds.Add your own subtitles on almost any video/movie streaming platform you can think of, such as Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, Netflix (with some restrictions), Youtube, Twitch and many more! Sometimes I'll use one of the audio settings on my receiver to boost the dialogue, but everything else sounds bizarre (echoed, tinny, artificial), so that's a rare thing. Raising the volume level doesn't always work as you're raising the level on everything else drowning out the dialogue too. ![]() I wish I didn't need them and could enjoy the picture. I usually don't need them with older films that have the dialogue centered and properly mixed, with actors talking above a whisper. Actors mumble, whisper, or rattle off their lines so quickly now.Īlso, when you get over 40 (especially with children in the household), mild hearing loss is to be expected. I have a pretty good surround sound setup and big TV, and I would say in the last 10-15 years, the sound mixing in movies has changed and dialogue can be so quick and inaudible that I find them necessary. The only time I used subtitles was when a movie was in a different language. I don't want my eye to see the line of dialogue before half of it has been performed by an actor. Maybe it's an attention span thing where their minds can't focus on characters talking, but reading is faster so they have a chance to catch up, but for me that's flipped. For me, that's barely less distracting than seeing someone acting out sign language in the corner of the picture. I've been in many situations where the TV can play at a louder volume and be heard just fine, and the person will turn it down so it can't be heard well, and put subtitles on. The only way I can figure it in my head is that people started watching movies on laptops with shitty internal speakers and an oppressively tight max volume, and then grew accustomed to it. I never saw this until about 8 years ago, and now it seems like the default way people watch. Never by choice, and it's extremely annoying when at a friend's place and after we agree to watch something, I realize they are one of those people. Is it any wonder we got a big-ass screen at home and just don’t bother with the movies anymore? So instead of simple non-electronic technology that was easy to use and never broke or simply stopped working, we got a really heavy and annoying piece of gear no one working at the theater actually understood how to use. It was not bright at all the smoked glass dimmed it a lot. I think the reason why that very simple, user friendly technology never took off was because people were distracted by it during the movie. I often joke she’s the only person in that theater who understood everything Jar Jar said. When I took my mom to see The Phantom Menace lo these many years ago, the theater had an led board on the balcony and gave her a piece of smoked plexiglass on an adjustable arm that she sat in the cup holder and arranged so the led reflected on the plexiglass. And they have these very slippery films that go over the glasses for 3D. Then your mother, who is not technical in the least, gets very impatient leading to you getting impatient and really, really trying not to snark at the attendants. ![]() ![]() But the captions don’t start until the feature so you can’t tell if they are working until the movie starts. They are clunky and heavy and hurt the nose but they have them.
